The Ice is In

It has been very foggy and cold the last few days. We have had little sun. This morning we had a freezing rain warning and the car and trees were completely covered with frozen rain drops. This is a spectacular sight to be seen but nothing compares to the sight at the beach this evening. Before Tom left to go to Raglan we went to Middle Cove beach. There was a little bit of ice floating in the sea. It was large chunks of really magnificent blue ice. On the way home from taking Lewie to karate this evening I noticed how white the sea was in Torbay. We took a little side trip on the way home to Torbay Beach. The Ice in the Sea is really amazing to see. It is white all the way out to the horizon. The air is really chilly as it is coming off the sea. The Ice has the blue tint to it and is completely packed into the bay. I am no great photographer so these pictures do not do justice to the image but hopefully you can see all the Ice. A truly spectacular sight, especially as the Sun came out after being absent all week.

Wow what a strange sight! It is hard to believe it can be that cold when we have it so hot here. You really do get some weird weather phenomena...I bet Tom was sad to miss it.

This is amazing Michelle - and thanks for getting it on your blog so we can see it. Your photos are fine - extraordinary how far out to sea the lumpy ice goes - I wonder how long it will take to clear?

By the way... where does all that ice come from?Has it broken off the arctic ice cap and washed down and been blown in, or has it actually formed in the sea in Torbay?

I am not sure! I think the Ice is the Pack Ice coming down from the Arctic. It sometimes makes it into the bay other times it doesn't. It just depends on which way the wind is blowing at the time the Ice is around. There have been a lot of sealing boats stuck of the North East coast in Ice. They have been there for 5 days. The Ice Breaker boat was out and broke up some of the ice, but some of the smaller boats where destroyed. No where to move too when Ice is cracking and pulls them down. No one has been hurt fortunatly. It is a big story here at the moment.
